The iconic, deeply scarred fluke of a well-known mature Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) known locally as “Handstand” cleaves the surface of the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick. The dramatic, deep-set wedge missing from the trailing edge of the right lobe is a healed injury from a severe commercial vessel propeller strike, highlighting the intense industrial threats facing migratory cetaceans in Canadian shipping corridors.
