While paddling at my local marsh one misty morning, I noticed several Sandhill Cranes feeding in a small pool. I waited on the other side of a grassy bank and made a number of images. One of this mated pair started dancing while their partner looked on. Sandhills mate for life and perform their elaborate dances as part of their courtship rituals most often just after dawn in the spring. Adult males are larger than females, so it seems that the female is the one initiating the dance here.
