As the surf pounded onto this remote beach, shorebirds ran across the sand in groups of mixed species. From a distance, I laid down in the sand on my stomach, and waited for their flurry of activity to bring them close to me. The shorebirds darted in and out of the frothy water, probing the sand with their bills for unlucky amphipods, when this Western Sandpiper stopped and began grooming itself. Ruffling through its feathers, it only paused for a minute, before it continued running across the sand with its flock.
