In this photo, a Steller’s Jay lands in the snow in mountains of coastal British Columbia, Canada. It was lots of fun to photograph this bird with a wider lens, in the incredible winter wonderland that is the coast mountains in winter. This is our provincial bird, and one that I never tire of seeing and photographing. Many of the jays in the area have learned to approach hikers looking for handouts, in addition to going tree to tree to gather natural seeds and nuts. When I saw this jay fly in to investigate my presence, I lay in the snow and waited with a wide angle lens. I offered a peanut, and the jay flew in, allowing me to capture this image.
